Crealdé School of Art: Celebrating Community Arts Since 1975
April 8th, 2012, Orlando--As visitors head down the winding road towards Crealdé School of Art, the noise of the busy streets of Winter Park fades away and guests are transported into an idyllic environment. Surrounded by lush oak trees, palms and foliage that embrace the quaint Spanish stucco and tiled roof studios, visitors immediately feel a sense of welcome, acceptance and belonging. Entering the heart of campus, one hears fountains gurgling in the pond and has a visual feast of greenery infused with a unique collection of over sixty outdoor sculptures that comprise Central Florida’s only contemporary sculpture garden. The staff and instructors exude a positive and creative energy; everyone that works there shares the same passion for life, creativity and the desire to share their knowledge and craft with the community. With over 100 studio courses and workshops offered at Crealdé School of Art, there is something for everyone. Children and adults are provided with opportunities to explore and discover their artistic potential through a sequential curriculum in drawing, painting, film photography, digital photography, ceramics, sculpture, metal forging, and traditional crafts such as glass work, bookmaking, and papermaking. From the flourishing natural environment, to the sculptures made by local Floridian artists scattered throughout the garden, to
the creative explorations occurring within the studios, to the gallery exhibitions displayed throughout Crealdé’s three gallery spaces, everywhere one looks in this verdant oasis, one can find creative inspiration.
Crealdé School of Art was established in 1975 by founder William S. Jenkins, and functions as a non-for-profit organization with the mission of providing the local community with an affordable and diverse array of classes that emphasize hands-on experiences of art-making. Crealdé also extends a scholarship and outreach program to families with special financial needs in order to meet the school’s commitment to serve the entire local community.
Crealdé School of Art receives support from local and state organizations, memberships, as well as private foundations. Crealdé also has a partnership with the City of Winter Park through the development of the Hannibal Square Heritage Center which pays tribute to the past, present, and future of Winter Park’s historic African American community. Classes and events occur at the main campus, at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, and at the smaller and more recent campus addition (2010) at the Jessie Brock Community Center in Winter Garden, FL. Throughout the three locations, winter, spring, summer, and fall sessions are offered that run for eight weeks and include a diverse collection of classes that occur at various times of the day, week, and weekend to promote accessibility for all students. There are age specific classes offered for young children, young adults, adults, and senior citizens. Utilizing a part-time faculty and staff of over forty local artists and art teachers, Crealdé School of Art provides the necessary professional expertise to educate students in a variety of art making methods and techniques, encourage creativity, and nurture artistic development. Along with regularly scheduled classes, Crealdé invites community members to celebrate and cultivate a passion for the arts through a variety of festivals, open houses, gallery receptions, and special weekend long workshops hosted by highly respected artists within the local community. Crealde School of Art provides a rich cultural experience for community members to celebrate their local heritage, exchange meaningful experiences, and build relationships through the visual arts.
